Christmas At Sea - The Seamans Church Institute - Charity Crochet

Christmas at Sea – The Seaman’s Church Institute

Christmas at Sea provides gifts to international mariners working at sea and mariners working on inland waterways in the United States. Any project made from a pattern published by the SCI (Seaman’s Church Institute) is accepted. They prefer washable wool or wool-blends. Most patterns require worsted weight yarn. Please avoid light colored yarns and pastels. They request you do not send projects in the following colors: rose, pink and lavender. Embellishments such as pom-poms, tassels and fringe are not accepted because they present a safety hazard. You can send your finished projects to The Seamen’s Church Institute at the address provided HERE.
The patterns are available as PDFs and can be found at the bottom of this page: Christmas at Sea

Little Hats, Big Hearts™

Celebrate American Heart Month by knitting, or crocheting red hats for babies who are born in participating hospitals in the month of February.  Little Hats, Big Hearts™ is a joint effort between the American Heart Association, The Children’s Heart Foundation and volunteers from around the country.

Little Hats Big Hearts™ - Charity Crochet

Little Hats, Big Hearts™

Red hats are given out to thousands of babies during February (American Heart Month) with the goal of empowering moms and children to live heart healthy lives. Their goal is to raise awareness and educate moms about the importance of heart health and to raise awareness about congenital heart defects.

You can help by crocheting hats and donating them to your State Specific donation center. You can select your State (or the closest State to you) from their search tool on their site HERE. Please check the deadlines for you specific donation area, as these dates can vary from center to center.

The hats submitted must meet specific requirements including:

  • Red in color
  • Cotton or acrylic yarn
  • Medium to heavy weight
  • Machine washable and dryable

They have requested simple hat patterns to be used. Please do not add embellishments (like buttons and bows) because they can become detached from the hat and be dangerous to the babies. Links to a few free patterns have been included HERE.
